1. I was born on March 3 or 3/3. The number 3 has always been lucky for me. All number oriented things in my life have threes in them. Home address. Phone numbers (work, cell, and home). Number of letters in my first name. Wedding date (this one was by choice). Etc., etc., etc. I even have three parents.
2. The first time I met B’s best friends, they visited us from Pennsylvania . They’re both geologists and are a little on the odd side (which, I believe, is the highest compliment you can pay anyone). They play number games in their minds. For M, every number he sees has to somehow add up to, multiply to, or subtract to the number 3. See what I mean about the number 3?
3. My dad trained to be an opera singer when he was young, so I grew up with opera playing in the house (often very loudly and before the sun came up).
4. My mom is a school social worker and listens to NPR when she travels betweens schools. A good portion of her sentences start with, “I heard on NPR…”
5. Sometimes I define myself in relation to my parents. Maybe that’s an only child thing.
6. I actually have three sisters: a half sister and two stepsisters.
7. When I was 11 or 12, I started calling my stepdad Dupie. I never knew what my stepsisters thought of it. Now L's little ones call him Baba Dupie. That makes me super happy.
8. I’m absolutely addicted to Diet Coke. Coke Zero is fabulous. I once gave up diet coke for a year. And although I slept better and probably saved hundreds of dollars, whenever I passed a coke machine or a Circle K, I finally understood what it feels like to be a crack addict.
9. I’ve been on some amazing trips to Israel, Tibet, Morocco, and other faraway lands. But I’ve never been to Vermont. And most days, I’d rather be at home.
10. I fell in love with B on our fourth date. You’re thinking, “Shouldn’t it have been the third date?” Ah, yes, but I’m a little slow when it comes to love.
11. I think of myself as a poet, but haven’t written a poem in over three years. It’s hard to write happy poems.
12. I’ve read a lot of memoirs recently. I suddenly feel like the truth is more captivating than fiction. I’m sure I’ll start reading fiction again soon. Sometimes it’s easier to get lost in stories that don’t belong to real people.
13. I am crazy in love with the Obamas.
14. I am fiercely pro-choice and ardently feminist.
15. Five years ago, I thought I’d work forever. And ever. Now I’d like to retire at 50. Or 40. I’ve become a 401(k)/RothIRA expert. I’d like to travel and read and fish and play and generally have a good (albeit retired) life. I’d like to do these things while I work, too.
16. Speaking of fishing, I now get a fishing license every year. I know the difference between a bass and a trout and a northern pike. I even know what cowbells, powerbait, and spinners look like. We have a boat in our garage. It’s all very surreal.
17. I grew up on the bluffs of the Mississippi and spent a good deal of time at the beach in California. I’m a water kid who lives in the desert. Which is why fishing appeals to my most basic senses: being in a boat on a lake = heaven.
18. Although B was born and raised in the southwest, his family is all from Wisconsin. I think that’s why he feels like home to me.
19. I have way more pairs of jeans than any working girls needs.
20. I moved around a lot as a kid. All this moving around has made me, all at once, want to move every two years to a new, exciting place and stay in once place for the rest of my life. I know. It’s confusing to me, too.
21. We have two cats, Pixie and Cous Cous. During the day, they fight like mortal enemies. Hissing. Growling. Bopping each other on the head. Occasional biting. At night, they curl up in bed with us, purr like it’s going out of style, and lick each other’s bellies. Ah, sisters.
22. I have trouble sleeping in hotels now. I think it’s the lack of purring.
23. I decided I was an atheist at age 9. At age 10, I was converted to Judaism in my dad’s synagogue (necessary because lineage in Judaism is passed through your mother). At age 14, I was confirmed in my mom and stepdad’s church. I have relatives who are Hasidic and Mormon. I am still an atheist.
24. I do think we’re all connected to each other. That we have an obligation to take care of each other and of this planet of ours. I think there are many reasons why we can and should be good people. I don’t think god factors into that equation.
25. My favorite words are Kalamazoo and Okoboji. In espanol, I like pantuflas.
26. I’m deathly afraid of my parents dying. All three of them.
27. My dream of success is being able to afford a weekly massage.
28. My life has been super lucky. I also think luck is a state of mind. If only the lottery agreed!
29. I was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes on St. Patrick’s Day. I gave shots for thirteen years, but now I have an insulin pump and a continuous glucose monitor attached to me at (almost) all times. I am nearly bionic.
30. Every year on St. Patrick’s Day, my mom gives me a present and a card to commemorate the day. How sweet is that?!
31. My friends are the best.
32. I do not like being confined to only 25 things.
33. And the 3s have it. So, there are 33 things!
